Typo 3 - Secial glass - crystal-FIVES Fives in Glass

Lead-free crystal, full lead crystal, opal and borosilicate glasses of differing compositions and water glass all fall into a category of special glass types. Specialised systems and technical know-how are required for successful glass meting and production.

In fuel fired furnaces, electric boosting provides a means of increasing melt rates whilst improving melt quality.

The effectiveness of the furnace combustion system is benefited by a reduction in the glass temperature gradient within the melt; ultimately the total fuel (and oxygen) consumption per kg of product is reduced.
Fives has supplied a range of different designs and installed powers into the worldwide glass industry, each system tailored to suit the glass type, production and quality requirement. Multi-zone boosting systems with electricity contributing more than 50% of the melt energy are now common in the Fibreglass industry; all systems feature advanced control and monitoring systems and high-specification C-type (no-weld) electrode holders.

'Health and Safety' considerations are important in the case of glasses having a major volatile constituent e.g. lead oxide, boron, arsenic etc. This is especially true where the loss of these materials from the melting batch may be virtually eliminated by using a cold top furnace where the crown temperature is less than 150 degrees C.
