'Health and Safety' considerations are important in the case of glasses having a major volatile constituent e.g. lead oxide, boron, arsenic etc. This is especially true where the loss of these materials from the melting batch may be virtually eliminated by using a cold top furnace where the crown temperature is less than 150 degrees C.
